Following the washing of the disciple's feet, Jesus spoke with the disciples for what he knew would be one of the last teachable moments he had with them. In this conversation, he gave them a clear and distinct commandment. This was a significant moment and conversation. What can we learn from this moment? Eucharist means "good gift, good grace". That to remember well the sacrifice of Jesus is to truly experience something in our lives. The Second Century Church Fathers taught that a mystery transpires when we "eat the bread and drink the cup" in remembrance. And that two elements rise to the top: Vertical, and Horizontal. The impact is the reminder that God loves us. That He has "no strings attached to His love for us." And, that we are "all in this together". We belong to each other. We have all been "adopted" (Romans 8:15, 16). This partaking of the Eucharist is a humbling experience. Its intention is to bring us to a place of thankfulness. And a deeper awareness that we all belong to each other. We are family. Even though we are very different.

Jesus wants us to practice what is good, "not letting our left hand know what our right hand is doing". That we must stop living our "Christian lives" with a great need to be recognized by others. Because our recognition comes from God. And HE sees and knows all things. That we need to affirm each other. But not live with an unhealthy need for being continually fawned over. Public prayer is about God...not making an impression on others that we are "spiritual and impressive."

Are you in a contractual or love relationship with God? It is our human nature to fall into a "justice" way of thinking. So, we come to Jesus, receive "the free gift of God, eternal life", and tend toward "earning" right standing with God. But, the Gospel is NOT a contractual, obligation based idea. The summary in the text is, when we love and give we are considered "sons of the most high God". And, that we are called to "be merciful even as your Father is merciful."

Church is so much more than what happens on Sunday morning. Church is about the people we walk with and do community with on an ongoing basis. The church is involvement in peoples lives and walking them through the hard stuff. It is all about authentic community.
